There was a moment back there behind us where 5.56 (and pretty much every other cartridge) was either out of stock or priced to the point where I might as well have been shooting .300blk….
So that’s exactly what I did.
I didn’t want to deviate too far from my main squeeze, the 11.5 KAC mod2. It would probably surprise you to learn that no one makes an 11.5 barrel in 300blk, the closest thing I could source was a Wilson Combat 11.3. I grabbed a stripped upper out of the spare parts bin and had a buddy install the barrel on 10.75″ KAC URX4 to mimic or ‘clone’ my fighting rifle.
It ran but had a few hiccups. I hopped on google and someone else had already figured out the solution. The bolt carrier had issues locking back with subsonic ammo so I swapped from a VLTOR A5 to a reduced power rifle spring. It ran beautifully.
With the amount of travel involved in shooting in my locale, I prefer to shoot under darkness and the .300blk rifle quickly became my favorite thing to shoot; especially suppressed and under goggles.
Shooting in the desert heat is for fools and mad dogs.
It presented itself as the prime “this is my home defense rifle” candidate. If I’m getting up to fight some nerd in my kitchen at 2 in the morning, I am probably not gonna throw a carrier and helmet on. I’ve seen dudes joke around about using night vision but all I really need is a bright white light. Boomers on arfcom shunned suppressors for many years for home defense but I don’t want to bum my neighbors out with a ruckus if I have to melt that guy in the kitchen. I don’t even want to wake my wife. So it’s gotta be quiet, It’s gotta be polite.
A year and some change later the market came down a little and stuff is available again. I’m shooting mostly 150/147gr stuff that I get from Ammo Supply Warehouse. The dudes at ASW genuinely give a shit about your individual freedoms. Californians, read that last sentence again.
Fast forward a little more and a friend sold me a MCX. He’s got his 300blk game covered and was thinning the heard. Shout out to King Palm🌴.
The Virtus started out as a side project, while I am not a naysayer of piston guns, they don’t do much for me and don’t solve any of my problems better than my DI stuff. Of the considerations I mentioned earlier (shooting a gun inside is loud!) engagement distance is a big one. It needs to dumpster anything I point it at. I do not ever see myself fighting from house to house here stateside, but home invasions and burglaries are a harsh reality and I need to maximize on the amount of bum-out points dished out in a defensive shoot.
This thing is way rad. With the 6.75″ barrel and 220gr subs, it’s dummy-quiet. Fastboi stuff like 147/150gr is plain silly. I can see why dudes go as hard as they do into 300blk.
Anyway, here’s the thing you came to look at.
